My starting point: the best gate is not necessarily the biggest or most expensive. It is the one that gets closed, works in bad weather and allows the farm, smallholding or rural home to function. It should control and delay access without creating a daily battle for the people who live and work there.
Design the entrance around everyday use
Define the gate’s real purpose
Decide whether the entrance must discourage casual callers, contain livestock, stop vehicles, delay a thief, identify visitors or control entry to a working yard. On many country properties it must do several of those jobs, but they should be clear before choosing the gate, lock or automation.
Be honest about the rest of the boundary. There is little point fitting an impressive gate if somebody can walk through a broken hedge, lift a nearby field gate or drive across an open verge. A busy farm entrance used by tractors and trailers also needs a very different solution from a private cottage drive.
Position the entrance safely
Drivers should be able to get clear of the road and wait without blocking traffic, reversing into danger or stopping on a blind bend. Check the entrance using the vehicles that genuinely visit: tractors, livestock trailers, horseboxes, feed lorries, oil tankers, refuse vehicles and emergency appliances—not just the family car. Include turning space, drainage, gradients, mud, ice and the fully open position of each gate leaf.
A gate should not open across a public footway or highway. Planning requirements can apply to new or altered gates, walls and fences, particularly near a highway, listed building or conservation area. Rules differ across the UK, so check the relevant local authority before work starts rather than relying on a general assumption.
Separate people and vehicles
Where people regularly enter on foot, provide a safe route that does not put them in the travel or trapping area of a vehicle gate. A pedestrian gate should be usable in boots and gloves, suitable for uneven or muddy ground and positioned where a caller can be seen and spoken to.
Think about children, older relatives, carers, postmen, dog walkers, riders, seasonal workers and delivery drivers. If the only pedestrian route is awkward, people will climb the main gate, squeeze through a livestock gap or stand in the road trying to reach the keypad.
Build a complete barrier line
The posts, foundations, hinges, stops, adjoining fence and ground clearance matter as much as the gate leaf. Check whether the gate can be lifted from its hinges, forced past a stop, reached around, crawled beneath or bypassed through vegetation. Protect exposed hinge pins and locking points where appropriate without introducing dangerous projections.
Keep hedges and fences maintained so they guide people towards the controlled entrance. Repair gaps promptly. The aim is not to create a fortress; it is to make the legitimate route obvious and unauthorised access deliberate, visible and more difficult.

Control access without making it unmanageable
Choose dependable locking
Select a locking point that is protected from leverage and does not leave a long chain or padlock hanging at a convenient working height. Use equipment that will still operate after months of rain, grit and frost. Check that the latch cannot simply be reached through the gate and keep the lock clear of the path of animals and machinery.
Farm and estate keys have a habit of spreading between family, employees and contractors. Keep a simple record of who has them, avoid the traditional “hidden” key near the entrance and change the arrangement when a key is lost or not returned. A lock that freezes every winter or needs two hands in the rain will eventually be left open.
Select practical access control
Keys are simple but difficult to cancel. Keypads work well until the same code is known by half the village. Fobs can usually be removed individually, while phone or app control can help at a distant entrance but depends on signal, power and somebody being available.
Choose the least complicated system that genuinely meets the need. Give regular workers individual access where possible and have a clear method for vets, shearers, machinery engineers, feed deliveries and short-term contractors. If access control slows every working movement, somebody will wedge the gate open and defeat the whole arrangement.
Should the gate be automated?
Automation can make sense when a manual gate is constantly left open because nobody wants to climb out of a cab in driving rain. It is not automatically the better option. It adds machinery hazards, power and communication dependencies, servicing, emergency release and continuing cost. Automate only after the entrance geometry and gate structure are suitable, using a competent specialist who will assess the whole installation—not simply bolt a motor onto an old field gate.
Manage visitors and deliveries
Provide clear, polite instructions before a visitor reaches the gate mechanism. The farm, house or holding name should be readable from the approach, and the intercom or bell should be obvious. Avoid signs that reveal residents’ routines or explain how the gate can be bypassed.
Work out how the post, parcels, groceries, feed, fuel, animal collections, vets and tradespeople will be handled. A secure delivery box outside the controlled area can prevent unnecessary entry. Large vehicles may need the gate left open for an agreed period, but that should be a conscious arrangement rather than the normal state.
Add observation and alerts
Position lighting so a caller can use the intercom and be seen without being dazzled. A camera should capture useful facial or vehicle detail at the controlled point rather than a distant general view. A driveway alert can provide early notice, while the intercom lets the resident assess the reason for the visit.
Test the camera and intercom in darkness, rain and with vehicle headlights facing the entrance. Keep recording proportionate, respect neighbouring property and public areas, and use clear signage where required. The gate should still be operable safely if a camera or alert fails.
Plan power and communications
Confirm the route and protection for power, control and data cables, including where tractors, hedge cutters, livestock and digging work could damage them. Rural entrances may be far beyond dependable household Wi-Fi, and stone buildings, trees, dips in the land and metal sheds can reduce radio or mobile performance. Test equipment at the actual gate before committing to it.
Decide what happens during a power cut, broadband failure or mobile outage. Suitable backup may keep the gate operating for a limited period, but residents must also know how to release it manually and secure the entrance afterwards. Do not use improvised outdoor wiring or unprotected joints.
Make safety and maintenance non-negotiable
Treat powered gates as machinery
A powered gate can crush, trap, shear or draw in a person if the complete installation is not properly designed and maintained. Children, visitors, animals and people unfamiliar with the system may enter danger areas without understanding them. Photocells or safety edges are part of a solution, not a substitute for a full risk assessment.
Use a competent installer who will assess the gate, posts, hinges, travel area, force, controls, safeguards and foreseeable misuse. Ask for operating instructions, safety information, test results and the declaration and technical documentation appropriate to the installation. Do not defeat a safety device to keep a faulty gate running.
Provide emergency access and release
Residents and workers should be able to leave during a fire, medical emergency or power failure without hunting for a special key in a dark workshop. Position the manual release so authorised users can operate it safely, while protecting it from obvious external manipulation.
Consider how an ambulance or fire appliance reaches the house, yard or isolated building and how a locked entrance affects them. This matters on long drives, shared forestry tracks and farms with several entrances. Keep the correct property address, what3words or grid reference and clear directions available for an emergency call.
Test and maintain the entrance
Inspect locks, hinges, posts, stops, tracks, drainage, safety devices, signage, lighting, intercoms and backup power. Clear vegetation without opening a new route around the gate. After storms, a machinery strike, frost or ground movement, check the alignment before carrying on as normal.
Powered systems need competent servicing at the specified interval and whenever their behaviour changes. Keep a simple record of faults, repairs, access credentials and safety tests. Review the entrance when stock routines, tenants, staff, vehicles or deliveries change. Rural security works best when it becomes part of normal property maintenance, not a job remembered only after an incident.
A useful 20-minute entrance check
- Approach from both road directions and check sight lines and safe waiting space.
- Inspect the gate, posts, hinges, stops, lock and adjoining boundary from both sides.
- Check that pedestrians do not need to stand in the road or pass through a powered-gate danger area.
- Make a test intercom call and review the camera image after dark.
- Account for current keys, fobs, codes and app users.
- Test the manual release and the plan for loss of power or communications.
- Stop and obtain competent advice if a powered gate has damaged, missing or unreliable safeguards.
Tip: repeat the check after storms, ground movement, building work or any impact to the gate.
